For Indians in particular, the German labor market in the STEM sector has been very attractive in recent years: In the second quarter of 2022, almost 25,000 people from the South Asian country were working in academic STEM professions in this country – three times as many as five years earlier. This is partly due to the fact that the German government has been actively recruiting skilled workers in India since 2012. In addition, there are many Indian STEM students at German universities, an increasing number of whom remain in Germany after graduation.For the first time, Russia was among the top five foreign nationalities in academic STEM occupations in the second quarter of 2022. The Russian war of aggression in Ukraine, which has prompted many well-educated people to leave Russia, is likely to intensify this trend.
