Bye, bye, Boomer

The numerically strong cohorts of the baby boom generation are slowly retiring. They were born in the late 1950s and 1960s. In the 2020s, these age cohorts will leave the labor market. Currently, people of retirement age still make up the smallest part of the population. In ten to 15 years, they will represent the largest share, according to the Institute for Employment Research. At the same time, the Federal Statistical Office estimates that fewer and fewer children are likely to be born in Germany. More women are working than in the past, and many workers are staying in the workforce longer, but this is not enough to fill all the jobs. However, according to federal government figures, the gap of around 240,000 skilled workers between new demand and new supply by 2026 is less than half the 540,000 expected last year for 2025. This is justified by the higher labor supply, for example due to refugees from Ukraine, and lower economic growth.

More than a few are happy to see the boomers retire – even though there will be many dislocations in the labor market as a result (finally?). After all, subsequent generations are not too fond of the boomers.
