A new US meta-study is currently doing the rounds: in “Global Evidence on Gender Gaps and Generative AI<\/a>“, a team of authors from Berkeley, Stanford and Harvard reveals an interesting – and unfortunately sobering – picture of gender differences in the use of generative AI. Based on data from over 100,000 participants from 26 countries and web traffic analyses, the study provides in-depth insights into how generative AI is used differently by men and women. A topic that should give food for thought not only to the tech industry, but also to politics and society. <\/p>\n\n

The key findings at a glance<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n

The meta-analysis clearly shows that men worldwide use generative AI tools more frequently than women – in almost all regions, industries and professions. Even when women have access to the same tools, they are often more reluctant to use them. Specifically, the study found that women are 24.6% less likely to use generative AI tools than men. The example from Kenya is particularly impressive: here, all participants had equal access to AI tools, yet women used them less frequently. <\/p>\n\n

But why is that? The meta-study debunks a frequently cited argument: the gender gap cannot simply be explained by the underrepresentation of women in certain professional fields such as IT. Even when factors such as education, professional experience, location or personal preferences are taken into account, the gender gap persists – and in some cases even widens. <\/p>\n\n

Web traffic confirms the phenomenon<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n

An additional highlight of the study is the analysis of web traffic data on popular AI platforms such as ChatGPT, Claude, Midjourney and Perplexity. The gender distribution confirms the picture from the survey data: Men visit AI websites significantly more often than women. This reinforces the relevance of the results and shows that the gender gap in AI usage is more than just a statistical coincidence. <\/p>\n\n

Why this gap is a serious problem<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n

The implications of this gender gap could have far-reaching consequences for technology development. As generative AI is still at a relatively early stage, there is a risk that women will have less influence on the design of these tools due to their lower usage. <\/p>\n\n

This is a shortcoming that may be reflected in the user experience, as developers often rely on data for use by early adopters<\/em>. If women and their specific needs are not sufficiently taken into account, this could lead to AI systems that reinforce common gender stereotypes and neglect tasks that are particularly relevant for women. <\/p>\n\n

What can be done?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n

The authors of the study call for the gender gap to be reduced not only through equal access to AI tools, but also by addressing social and behavioral barriers. <\/p>\n\n
