The development of artificial intelligence (AI) is on the verge of a decisive turning point. At the 8th FII conference in Riyadh, there was an interesting panel discussion on AI<\/a> with some of the tech bros (and a woman from Google) on their respective assessments. For me, the most interesting part was the short presentation by Eric Schmidt, former CEO of Google, with his vision of AI development in the coming years. His predictions are as impressive as they are worrying. I will briefly summarize this here using Perplexity – and add to it selectively.<\/em><\/p>\n\n

The next five years: the age of AI savants<\/h2>\n\n

First of all, we will see the emergence of highly specialized AI assistants – so-called “savants”. These digital experts will support us in specific areas, be it art, music or science. The technological foundations for this are already in place: from complex planning algorithms to sophisticated reasoning systems. <\/p>\n\n

The breakthrough: self-improving systems<\/h2>\n\n

According to Schmidt, the real breakthrough will come around 2030. AI systems will then be able to optimize their own code – a recursive process that will lead to exponential improvements. The result? Systems that can achieve 90% of the capabilities of human experts in almost all areas at the same time. <\/p>\n\n

Opportunities and challenges<\/h2>\n\n

This development holds enormous potential: from groundbreaking scientific discoveries to revolutionary solutions for global challenges. At the same time, Schmidt warns of the risks, particularly in the areas of cyber security and biotechnology. <\/p>\n\n

The open source debate<\/h2>\n\n

The discussion surrounding open source AI deserves particular attention. The current rule of thumb that models costing less than 100 million dollars to train are considered “safe”, while more expensive ones are classified as “more dangerous”, seems surprisingly arbitrary. The increasing availability of inexpensive, powerful AI tools could harbor both opportunities and significant risks. <\/p>\n\n

Man and machine<\/h2>\n\n

Despite all the technological advances, humans will not become obsolete. Schmidt draws an interesting comparison with sport here: just as we prefer to watch human Formula 1 drivers rather than autonomous vehicles, there will be areas in which we consciously prefer the human element. A golf competition between robots would also be rather boring from an entertainment point of view. Okay, both sports are rather boring to watch from my point of view anyway, but I understand what he’s getting at. <\/p>\n\n

Summary<\/h2>\n\n

The coming years will be decisive for the development of AI. While the technological possibilities are impressive, we face the challenge of shaping this development responsibly. Schmidt’s warning that we as a society are not yet ready for these changes should give us food for thought. <\/p>\n\n

The question is no longer whether, but how we prepare for this new era. It is up to us to set the right course in order to exploit the opportunities of this technology while minimizing its risks. <\/p>\n\n
